Oral Histories

In November of 2021, family members and friends of Venus Jones were interviewed by Dr. Erin Devlin, Associate Professor of History and American Studies at the University of Mary Washington. Interviewed were Albert Jones III, Venus’s brother, and Carmencita Stewart, Chip Cartwright, and Lillie Williams – three of Venus’s high school classmates and neighborhood friends. These oral histories cover topics including what it was like to grow up in a segregated Petersburg, VA, the integration of higher education in Virginia, and of course, personal reflections on the life of Venus Jones from those who were closest to her. Below are the full audio recordings and written translations of these interviews.
